India Faces $200 Billion Annual Climate Adaptation Costs
India and Greater China might need to spend over $200 billion every year to protect against climate change by 2050.
This is because many people are at risk from extreme weather like heat, floods, droughts, and wildfires.
Right now, India spends only $15 billion a year, which is much less than what is needed.
Most of the cost will be for things like air conditioning, flood-proofing, and early-warning systems.
The government, businesses, and individuals will all need to contribute to these costs.
India and Greater China could face over $200 billion annually in climate adaptation costs by 2050.
Current spending in India is $15 billion annually, which is 13% of the needed amount.
90% of India's population is exposed to at least one climate hazard.
Over half of the projected costs will be borne by private actors like individuals and businesses.
Public investments will account for around 30% of the costs, with the remaining 20% supporting hybrid initiatives.
