Calcutta High Court denies relief to absconding quarry owner

Calcutta High Court denies relief to absconding quarry owner

The Calcutta High Court refused to temporarily protect quarry owner Tulu Mondal from arrest.

Mondal had asked the court to stop police from taking coercive action against him.

The state government opposed his request.

It said he left the country on May 23 and has not returned.

A lower court had ordered him to appear in person on September 14.

Police have taken control of assets worth about Rs 220 crore.

Investigators also suspect he owns nearly 400 bighas of land.

They are examining allegations that stone quarries used fake carbon copies to avoid paying state taxes.
