SEBI Proposes Updates to Mutual Fund Categorization
Imagine mutual funds as big pots of money that invest in different things.
SEBI, the financial rules maker, is updating the rules for these funds.
They want to create new types of funds for kids and retirement with different mixes of stocks and bonds.
They also want to let funds invest in gold, silver, and other investments to help diversify.
To stop too many similar funds from popping up, new funds must be different from existing ones.
Lastly, they are considering allowing big funds to start new, similar funds once they get too large, although some worry this could cause problems for investors in the older fund.
SEBI proposed new regulations for mutual fund categorization in October 2017.
Assets invested in mutual funds have grown from ₹22 lakh crore to over ₹74 lakh crore.
New categories of retirement and children’s funds will be introduced with varying debt and equity proportions.
SEBI seeks to limit new thematic funds with a 50% overlap rule.
SEBI proposed relaxing the one-scheme-per-category rule for schemes over ₹50,000 crore.
