Tamil Nadu Seeks Assurance Over Parliamentary Seats After Delimitation

Tamil Nadu Seeks Assurance Over Parliamentary Seats After Delimitation

Delimitation means changing the boundaries of voting areas.

Tamil Nadu is worried that this could reduce its number of seats in Parliament.

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay asked the Union government to promise that no state will lose representation.

He said southern states should not be punished for successfully controlling population growth.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly has asked that the Lok Sabha remain at 543 seats.

It also wants women’s 33% reservation to begin in 2029 using the current seats.

Some Tamil Nadu opposition parties criticized Vijay’s position.

Congress said current seat allocations, including Tamil Nadu’s 39 seats, should remain for another 25 years.
