Birthright Order Alters Social Security Number Requirements
Currently, anyone born in the US is a citizen.
But a new rule is coming.
It says a child born in the US is only a citizen if at least one parent is a citizen or has a green card.
This comes from a Trump order.
It could mean children born to temporary visa holders won't be citizens.
To get a social security number, the government will need to see proof that the parents are citizens or have permission to live here permanently.
So parents will have to prove their status, before their children can get their SSN.
President Trump's executive order restricts automatic birthright citizenship.
The order requires proof of citizenship or eligible immigration status for parents of children born after the EO takes effect.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) will change its procedures to comply with the order.
SSN applicants will need to provide additional evidence demonstrating parental US citizenship or lawful permanent residency.
Green card holders will have to prove their status to obtain an SSN for their children.
