Gold Loans See Significant Growth in Bank Portfolios
Imagine you have some gold jewelry and you need money.
Banks are now offering more money for your gold than before.
This is happening because the price of gold has gone up a lot.
Also, some rules have changed that make it easier for people to get loans against their gold.
Because of these reasons, banks have seen a big increase in the amount of money they have lent out using gold as security.
This means more people are choosing to get loans by pledging their gold instead of other types of loans.
Experts think this trend will continue, and the total amount of money lent against gold will grow even more.
Banks' portfolio of loans against gold jewelry (LAGJ) exceeded ₹1 lakh crore in the first half of FY2026.
The LAGJ portfolio experienced a 51% increase in H1 FY2026, adding ₹1,07,307 crore.
Gold prices rose approximately 29% between March and September 2025, increasing the loan amount possible for the same gold collateral.
Regulatory changes, including a higher loan-to-value ratio of 85%, have contributed to the growth.
The organized gold loan market is projected to reach ₹15 lakh crore in the current financial year, a year ahead of previous estimates.
