SC to Hear Plea for Victim-Centric Death Penalty Guidelines
The Supreme Court is going to look at new rules for the death penalty.
Right now, the rules mostly focus on the people who committed the crime.
The government wants the court to consider the victims and society more when deciding on the death penalty.
They think the current rules are unfair to victims and their families.
The court will look at these new ideas on October 8.
This is in response to a 2014 case where the court set the rules.
The Supreme Court will hear the Centre’s plea for new death penalty guidelines.
The Centre wants guidelines that consider victims and society.
The application was filed by the Centre in January 2020.
The case references the 2014 Shatrughan Chauhan v. Union of India case.
The Centre argues that the current guidelines are accused-centric.
