India Weighs Changes to Scrap Metal Inspection Rules

India Weighs Changes to Scrap Metal Inspection Rules

India is deciding how to check imported scrap metal for safety problems.

Recycling companies want India to do more inspections when shipments arrive at Indian ports.

They say many countries do not have enough approved inspection agencies before shipments leave.

The government has not agreed to end the current pre-shipment inspection rule.

It says checks before shipment and checks at Indian ports do different jobs.

India receives about 13 million metric tons of recyclable metal scrap each year.

The recycling group says early inspections can stop dangerous materials from being shipped.

It is also seeking approval for more inspection agencies and more countries whose shipments may not need inspections.
