India’s Chief Justice Urges AI, Digitalisation in Courts

Chief Justice Surya Kant said courts should use digital tools and artificial intelligence.

He made the comments at a meeting of Asian constitutional courts in Uzbekistan.

Technology could help people access courts more easily.

It could also reduce delays and make legal procedures simpler.

AI could help judges and court workers research information.

However, AI should not make the final decisions in cases.

Judges must continue to make those decisions.

Courts must also protect dignity, equality, liberty and fairness.

The goal is to combine useful technology with constitutional values.
