RBL Bank’s FCNR(B) Deposits Offer Gains, But Timing Risks

RBL Bank’s FCNR(B) Deposits Offer Gains, But Timing Risks

RBL Bank has received a large amount of foreign-currency deposits called FCNR(B) deposits.

Some of this money is already being used as security for loans.

About ₹22,163 crore remains available for repaying deposits or making new loans.

These deposits do not have to be kept aside for certain reserve requirements.

That means the bank may be able to lend the entire available amount.

The bank could earn a spread between the interest it receives and pays.

This might eventually add about ₹1,100 crore a year to its net interest income.

However, the bank must record the deposit interest immediately, while finding loans for the money may take time.

As a result, investors’ excitement may be justified over the long term, but FY27 results could initially be weaker.
