Florida Designates Muslim Groups as Terrorists
Florida's governor, Ron DeSantis, has declared the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as foreign terrorist organizations.
This means Florida will take steps to stop these groups from doing harmful activities in the state.
The governor said these groups have a history of violence and supporting terrorism.
CAIR plans to sue DeSantis, saying his declaration is unfair and against the law.
The governor's order also mentions that these groups have ties to Hamas, a group already considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. The order will stay in effect unless a law says it can't.
CAIR was founded in 1994 and has chapters in nearly two dozen U.S. states.
Last month, Texas Governor Greg Abbott took a similar step against CAIR, which has challenged the move in federal court as an unconstitutional effort to punish the organization simply because of its views.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis designated the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as foreign terrorist organizations on December 8, 2025.
The order directs Florida agencies to prevent unlawful activities by these organizations, including receiving state contracts, employment, or funding.
CAIR plans to file a lawsuit against DeSantis, calling the declaration defamatory and unconstitutional.
The order states that the Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 and has a history of violence and supporting terrorism.
CAIR denies any ties to Hamas and was founded in 1994 with chapters in nearly two dozen U.S. states.
