Rebellions Challenge Maharashtra Alliances Ahead of Council Polls
Maharashtra is holding elections for five seats on its legislative council.
Some seats are for graduates to vote in, and others are for teachers.
Two political alliances, the ruling Mahayuti and the opposition MVA, have chosen candidates.
Some people who wanted their party’s nomination filed to run anyway.
In some places, parties within the same alliance have also put forward candidates for the same seat.
The NCP says alliance partners should discuss how to share seats, including the Pune Graduates’ seat.
Polling is planned for October 23.
The votes will be counted on October 27.
Elections will be held for five Maharashtra Legislative Council seats: three Graduates’ and two Teachers’ constituencies.
The Mahayuti and MVA face challenges from aspirants who filed nominations against their alliances’ official candidates.
In Nagpur Graduates’, Congress nominated sitting MLC Abhijeet Wanjari, while BJP nominated Sudhakar Kohale; former BJP MLC Anil Sole filed as an independent.
In Amravati Teachers’, Congress nominated Aditi Pohare and Mahayuti nominated sitting MLC Kiran Sarnaik, while Sena (UBT) also nominated Dattatray Lahane.
Polling is scheduled for October 23, with votes to be counted on October 27.

Sunil Tatkare
Maharashtra NCP state president
“Whenever such a question arises, there are ways (to resolve). Of course, discussion is the only way. We have to go and have a discussion and that too, amicably. A formula can emerge.”

“As the NCP state president, and all in the NCP, including our National President, were hopeful that the seat would be given to the NCP. But so far, this has not materialised.”
