Mamdani Sworn In as NYC's First Muslim Mayor
Zohran Mamdani, who will be New York's first Muslim mayor, is going to be sworn in at midnight on New Year's Day 2026.
He chose a special place for this event: an old, abandoned subway station.
This place is important to him because it shows his promise to help working people and make life better for them.
He won the election against Andrew Cuomo, who was supported by President Trump.
Mamdani said that this place reminds everyone that New York can still do great things for its people.
He is excited and honored to lead the city into a new time of opportunities.
Later, there will be a big celebration at City Hall with a party in the streets.
Mamdani will also use a very old Quran that belongs to the New York Public Library, which is a big deal because no mayor has ever used a Quran before.
This Quran is special because it shows how different cultures and religions are part of New York's history.
Some people are not happy about this, but Mamdani says he will not hide who he is or his beliefs.
Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York City's first Muslim mayor at midnight on January 1, 2026, at the decommissioned City Hall subway station.
He took his oath on a centuries-old Quran from the New York Public Library, marking a historic first for the city.
Mamdani, at 34, is also the city's youngest mayor in over a century and its first South Asian and African-born mayor.
The inauguration was administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James, with a public ceremony to follow at City Hall.
Mamdani's campaign focused on affordability, including free child care, free buses, a rent freeze, and city-run grocery stores.
