Tata Sons Ownership: Trusts Lead, SP Group Holds 18.4%

Tata Sons is the main company that sits at the top of the Tata Group.

It is not personally owned by one Tata family member.

Instead, philanthropic trusts connected with the Tata family own about two-thirds of it.

The two largest trusts are the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust.

The Shapoorji Pallonji Group is the second-largest shareholder, with an 18.4% stake.

Tata Group companies and other shareholders own the remaining shares.

The trusts use dividends from their Tata Sons shares to support causes such as education and healthcare.

The SP Group has proposed selling or monetising part of its stake to raise at least Rs 25,000 crore.

Tata Trusts has said it has not agreed to a listing of Tata Sons and wants the historic structure to be preserved while all options are considered.
