UN Denounces Iran's Intensified Crackdown on Journalists and Minorities Post-Israel War
Imagine a country's government is like a parent who gets very angry after a big fight with another country.
A group of international helpers from the United Nations said that after Iran had a fight with Israel, the Iranian government started being much stricter with its own people.
They arrested over 21,000 people, including reporters and people who stood up for rights.
The helpers also said that Iran has been executing more people than usual, more than last year.
They are also treating minority groups, like Kurds and Arabs, and even people from Afghanistan, unfairly.
The government is also making it hard for journalists to do their jobs, even threatening them outside the country.
This kind of strong crackdown after protests is something the Iranian government has done before.
The UN helpers are watching closely to make sure everyone's rights are respected.
UN fact-finders reported an intensification of oppression in Iran following a 12-day war with Israel.
Over 21,000 individuals, including lawyers, journalists, and activists, were arrested during and after the conflict.
Iran has increased executions in 2025, with over 1,200 to date, surpassing the previous year's total.
Repression of ethnic and religious minorities, including Kurds, Arabs, and Baha'is, has intensified, alongside deportations of Afghans.
Journalists face SIM card deactivation and credible threats in multiple countries, extending Iran's press repression beyond its borders.
