Nations Commit to Protect Oceans at UN Ocean Conference in Nice
Imagine the ocean is like a giant park, and countries met to make sure it stays healthy.
Over 170 countries promised to protect more of the ocean, stop pollution, and help the creatures that live there.
They made plans to give money to help and agreed to make some areas of the sea safe from harm.
Countries also worked on a big agreement to protect ocean life that's not close to any country, like the open sea.
Many people attended the meeting, from world leaders to scientists and other experts, who all want to keep the ocean healthy for everyone.
Over 170 nations agreed to expand marine protected areas and combat ocean pollution.
The Nice Ocean Action Plan was created to achieve the goals of the UN Ocean Conference.
Countries made voluntary commitments including financial investments and new marine protected areas.
The BBNJ Agreement saw additional ratifications, moving closer to entering into force.
The conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, included 15,000 participants.
