BCI mandates physical inspection of all law colleges, cracks down on illegal courses

The Bar Council of India is the group that makes sure law schools in India teach students properly.

They told every university to send people to actually visit each law college and check the buildings, classrooms, libraries and teachers.

Previously, universities could just trust papers and photos uploaded online, but now they must see the colleges in person.

The Bar Council is worried that some colleges run classes only on weekends or in shifts, which is not allowed.

They say a regular law course must have at least five hours of study every day and thirty hours each week.

Colleges that do not follow the rules cannot admit new students, even if they are waiting for approval.

Universities have six weeks to finish all the inspections and send a report.

The move follows a court decision from the Andhra Pradesh High Court about law college standards.

Colleges with serious problems could lose their affiliation or approval to teach law.
