Infosys Sets November 14 Record Date for Rs 18,000 Crore Share Buyback
Infosys is buying back its own shares for a large amount of money, and they've set a specific date, November 14, 2025, called the 'record date.'
If you own Infosys shares on this date, you'll be able to participate in this buyback.
It's like the company is saying, 'If you're a shareholder on this day, we'll buy some of your shares back from you.'
They are buying them for more than the usual market price.
A big change this year is how these buybacks are taxed.
Before, the company paid the tax.
Now, starting after October 1, 2024, the people who sell their shares back to the company will have to pay tax on the money they receive, as if it were extra income like a dividend.
There's a special rule for shares bought a long time ago, before February 1, 2018.
For those shares, the calculation of profit for tax purposes is a bit more complex to make sure people don't get taxed again on gains made in the past.
If you bought shares more recently, after February 1, 2018, the tax calculation is more straightforward.
Infosys has announced November 14, 2025, as the record date for its Rs 18,000 crore share buyback program.
The buyback price is set at Rs 1,800 per equity share.
Shareholders must hold Infosys shares by the record date to be eligible for the buyback.
Following changes from the Union Budget 2024, buybacks after October 1, 2024, are taxed in the hands of investors as deemed dividend income.
Capital gains tax calculation for buybacks differs based on whether shares were acquired before or after February 1, 2018, with 'grandfathering' rules applying to older shares.

For shares bought on or after February 1, 2018, capital gains are calculated as Sale Price minus Cost of Acquisition minus Expenses. For shares bought before February 1, 2018, a 'grandfathering' rule applies, adjusting the cost of acquisition using Fair Market Value (FMV) on January 31, 2018, to avoid taxing past gains again.
