ABC Sues FCC, Alleging Trump Pressure Threatened Broadcast Independence

ABC and its owner, Disney, are suing a government agency called the FCC.

They say the agency is examining their television licenses unusually early to pressure the network.

ABC believes the pressure is connected to President Donald Trump’s anger about some of its coverage and shows.

The network says it changed some programming decisions because it feared punishment.

For example, it did not show one of Trump’s speeches live on television, although it streamed it online.

ABC also says it has been more careful about inviting political candidates onto “The View.”

FCC Chair Brendan Carr says the agency is simply checking whether broadcasters are serving the public properly.

A court will consider whether the FCC’s actions are lawful and violate free-speech protections.
