India Introduces Strict New Waste Management Rules
The Indian government has made new rules about managing waste.
These rules will apply to everyone, including big cities, small towns, and even private lands.
The rules say that people can't just throw away waste anywhere.
They must follow special rules and pay fines if they don't.
The government will check if everyone is following these rules.
Cities must also set up places to turn food waste into compost and have special bins for different types of waste.
The rules also recognize the people who collect waste and say that their details must be put online.
The government wants to make sure that waste is managed properly all over the country.
Additionally, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is training new engineers to help implement these rules and keep the city clean.
The Indian government has introduced new Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which will apply to all urban and rural areas, including government and private lands.
The rules mandate that all local bodies must define penalties and impose fines on indiscriminate waste dumping and file annual returns with the MoEFCC.
Pollution control boards will monitor waste management plans and their implementation, reviewing them at least twice a year.
Urban local bodies must set up zone-wise decentralized composting units and use color-coded bins for different types of waste.
The rules recognize the role of the informal sector in waste management and require local bodies to prepare ward-wise databases of waste pickers and upload them on a centralized online portal.
