UPI MDR Introduces Fees, Reviving Debate Over Transaction Tax

UPI MDR Introduces Fees, Reviving Debate Over Transaction Tax

UPI payments were described as free for everyone.

A new rule says that only payments up to Rs 2,000 are covered as free UPI.

From 15 October, some merchants must pay a small fee when they receive larger UPI payments.

The fee is 0.4 percent and cannot be more than Rs 300.

Some payments, such as railway and fuel payments, have a flat Rs 5 fee.

Small QR-code merchants and transfers between individuals do not have to pay this fee.

The Finance Ministry had earlier promised not to charge for UPI and denied reports of such a fee.

The government will not roll back the charges, while the Opposition describes them as a UPI tax.
