GHMC Ward Delimitation Faces Legal Challenges
The GHMC in Hyderabad has been making big changes to the city's wards.
They renamed over 30 wards and redrew their boundaries because they merged 27 nearby areas into the city, making it much bigger.
The GHMC asked people and politicians for their opinions and received almost 6,000 suggestions.
They considered the important ones and made the changes.
Now, the city has 300 wards instead of 150, and it covers a much larger area.
However, some people are not happy with these changes and have gone to court to challenge them.
The court has not stopped the changes yet, but the legal battle is still going on.
The final report will be released after the government approves it.
The Telangana High Court refused to grant interim relief in 80 writ petitions challenging the GHMC's ward delimitation process.
The GHMC's final delimitation report was submitted to the state government, increasing the number of wards from 150 to 300 and expanding the city's footprint from 650 sq. km to 2,000 sq. km.
The court noted that over 5,000 objections had been considered by the State Government in accordance with the prescribed procedure.
The State Government argued that judicial intervention in electoral matters is barred by Article 243ZG of the Constitution and that the delimitation process has been conducted in accordance with established rules.
The winter session of the state Assembly is scheduled to begin on December 29, where the schedule for MPTC, ZPTC, and municipal elections is likely to be finalized.
