UNEP Report: $30 Spent Harming Nature for Every $1 Preserved
A new report from the UN says that for every dollar spent on protecting nature, the world spends 30 dollars on things that harm nature.
In 2023, a huge amount of money, $7.3 trillion, was spent on things like fossil fuels and construction that are bad for the environment.
Only $220 billion was spent on solutions that help nature, like planting trees or protecting forests.
Most of this good money came from governments, not businesses.
The report says we need to spend much more on helping nature, about $571 billion every year by 2030, which is just a small part of the world's total money.
The UN wants leaders to stop spending so much on harming nature and start spending more on protecting it.
For every $1 invested in preserving nature, $30 is spent on harming it, according to a UNEP report.
In 2023, $7.3 trillion was financed in nature-negative investments, with $4.9 trillion from private sources.
Environmentally harmful subsidies accounted for $2.4 trillion in 2023.
Nature-based solutions received $220 billion in investment, with 90% from public sources.
Private investment in nature-based solutions was only $23.4 billion, or 10% of the total.
