EPFO moves UAN activation to Umang app with face authentication
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, or EPFO, helps workers in India save money for retirement.
People with salaried jobs can put part of their pay into an EPF account.
Each member gets a special number called a UAN, which stands for Universal Account Number.
Before, members could activate their UAN on the EPFO website.
Now, EPFO has moved that service to a government mobile app called Umang.
To activate the UAN, users must also scan their face using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.
This makes sure the person asking is really the member.
The change was made after a big upgrade to make the online services faster and more reliable.
For the 2025-26 financial year, members are getting an 8.25% interest rate on their savings.
This is the third year in a row the rate has been 8.25%.
EPFO has moved UAN activation and new UAN generation from its portal to the Umang mobile app.
The new process requires mandatory Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT).
The change follows a database consolidation and software upgrade aimed at making online services faster and more reliable.
The Centre ratified an 8.25% interest rate for EPF and VPF for FY26, with interest credited on 15 July.
Members can retrieve forgotten UANs via the EPFO portal, the Umang app, or by sending 'EPFOHO UAN' to 7738299899.
