India's Passport Rank Rises but Visa-Free Access Drops
India's passport has moved up in rank, but it doesn't mean Indian citizens can travel to more places without a visa.
In fact, the number of countries they can visit without a visa has gone down.
This is because two countries, Iran and Bolivia, have changed their rules.
Iran now requires a visa in advance due to safety concerns, and Bolivia has introduced an e-Visa system.
These changes make it harder for Indian people to travel to these countries.
Other countries like Singapore have passports that allow their citizens to visit many more places without a visa, which can make it harder for Indian businesses to grow and for people to move around the world easily.
India's passport rank improved from 85th to 80th in the Henley Passport Index 2026.
Visa-free access for Indian passport holders dropped from 57 to 55 countries.
Iran suspended visa-free entry for Indian citizens due to security concerns and kidnapping risks.
Bolivia introduced an e-Visa system, replacing the previous Visa On Arrival system.
Changes in visa policies by Iran and Bolivia contributed to the decrease in visa-free access for Indian passport holders.
