Joint Taxation Option for Married Couples in Budget 2026
The Indian government is considering a new rule for married couples to file their income tax together.
This would allow them to have a higher exemption limit of Rs 6–8 lakh, which could help families where only one person earns money.
Right now, couples file taxes separately, which can be unfair for families with one earner.
The idea is to make taxes more fair and help families with rising living costs.
Other countries like the United States and the United Kingdom already do this.
However, making this change would require big updates to the tax laws.
It's not sure if this will happen in the next budget, but it's a strong possibility.
The Indian government is considering an optional joint income-tax filing system for married couples with a higher family-level exemption limit of Rs 6–8 lakh.
This proposal aims to address the economic realities of modern Indian families, especially those with a single primary earner.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has suggested this idea in its pre-budget suggestions for the Union Budget 2026-27.
Under the proposed system, spouses could file a single combined return, potentially doubling the current individual threshold for exemptions.
Introducing joint filing would require comprehensive changes to the Income-tax Act, including reworking thresholds of deductions, exemptions, surcharges, and compliance procedures.
