Govt revises greenbelt norms for industries
The Indian government has changed the rules about green spaces that factories and industrial areas must have.
The new rules say that factories that cause more pollution, called red and orange category industries, need to have more green areas to help the environment.
For example, a red-category factory must have 25% of its area as green space, but if it doesn't cause much air pollution, it can have 5% less.
Orange-category factories must have 20% green space, or 15% if they don't cause much air pollution.
Factories that cause less pollution, called green and white industries, don't have to have green spaces unless they cause a lot of air pollution.
Industrial areas must have at least 10% of their area as a common green space.
The government will check to make sure these rules are followed by looking at reports and pictures taken by drones.
Government revised greenbelt norms for industries to balance land use and environmental needs.
Red-category industries must have 25% greenbelt/green cover (20% if not predominantly air polluting).
Orange-category industries must have 20% greenbelt/green cover (15% if not predominantly air polluting).
Green and white industries have optional greenbelt requirements, except if green-category industry has air pollution score of 25+ (then 10%).
Industrial estates must have a minimum of 10% common green area, with red and orange-category units having 15% and 10% greenbelt respectively.
