AI, localisation laws drive India’s data center boom

AI, localisation laws drive India’s data center boom

India is building many more data centers, which are large facilities filled with computer servers.

These servers support services such as digital payments, identity checks, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

AI systems need especially large amounts of computing power and electricity.

Indian rules also require some important personal and industry data to stay inside the country.

This encourages technology companies to build or lease facilities in India.

Data center capacity is expected to grow from about 2 gigawatts today to nearly 10 gigawatts by 2031.

The expansion could attract about $45 billion for construction, power, cooling and network equipment.

Companies must still find enough land and reliable, preferably renewable, electricity while managing the environmental impact.
