India's Economic Reforms and GDP Updates
India is making big changes to how it calculates its economy's health.
Starting next month, they will use a new method called double deflation to measure the real value of different industries.
This new method will use better data sources, like surveys and tax information, to make the numbers more accurate.
They are also updating the list of items used to calculate the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures inflation.
The new list includes more items like online streaming services and natural gas, reflecting what people are buying now.
The government is also focusing on making taxes fairer by adjusting them for inflation, making housing more affordable, and ensuring that credit is accessible and affordable.
The goal is to have a more reliable way to track the economy and understand how prices are changing, while also making sure that people's money goes further and that the economy keeps growing strongly.
India will adopt double deflation in the new GDP series starting next month, rebased to FY 2022-23 and released on February 27, 2026.
New data sources include major surveys and administrative datasets like GST data.
The CPI 2024 series will have 358 items, up from 299, reflecting changes in household expenditure patterns.
Budget 2026 focuses on inflation-proof taxes, housing reform, and credit stability to strengthen economic resilience.
The Indian economy is projected to grow at 7.4% in real terms and 8% in nominal terms in FY26, with CPI inflation around 2%.
