Jharkhand CM Demands More Central Funding for Student Scholarships
The chief minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren, wrote to the prime minister, Narendra Modi, asking for more money from the central government to help students get scholarships.
Jharkhand asked for about 66 crore rupees for a certain scholarship program but only got 12 crore.
For another program, they asked for 370 crore but only received 58 crore.
Because of this shortfall, many students are not getting the money they need.
The chief minister also said that students from Scheduled Tribes get less money than other groups and that the government has not given any money for minority students since 2021.
He wants the central government to fix these problems so students can keep studying.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren wrote to PM Narendra Modi demanding increased central funding for scholarship schemes.
The state requested Rs 66.14 crore for 2024‑25 and Rs 45.91 crore for 2025‑26 for pre‑matric scholarships, but received only Rs 12.61 crore and Rs 3.95 crore respectively.
Post‑matric scholarship requests of Rs 353.21 crore (2024‑25) and Rs 370.87 crore (2025‑26) were met with only Rs 33.57 crore and Rs 58.22 crore from the Centre.
Soren highlighted that Scheduled Tribe students receive lower scholarship amounts (Rs 3,000) than SC (Rs 3,500) and BC (Rs 4,000) students, and that no central funds were released for ST scholarships in 2025‑26.
The CM also noted that minority scholarship assistance has been suspended since 2021‑22 and called for the scheme’s revival.
