Nabard Survey Reveals Weak Rural Income Growth
A recent survey by Nabard shows that only about 28% of rural households in India saw their incomes rise over the past year, which is the lowest since the survey began.
More than half of the households reported no change in income, and nearly 20% saw a decline.
This weak income growth comes at a time when inflation is rising, and monsoon rains are below normal, affecting farming and crop sowing.
Despite this, rural consumption has remained relatively strong, with most households spending a significant portion of their income on consumption.
However, there is a growing reliance on informal sources of credit, such as borrowing from friends and relatives, due to the ease of access and the daunting processes of formal lending.
Economists are divided in their views, with some expressing concerns about the diverging income trends between urban and rural areas, while others see this as an early warning sign rather than conclusive evidence of a broad rural slowdown.
Only 27.7% of rural households reported an increase in income, the lowest since the survey began.
52.6% of households saw no change in income, the highest share ever recorded.
19.8% of households reported a decline in income.
Rural consumption remains robust, with 74.1% of respondents reporting higher consumption expenditure.
23.6% of households rely exclusively on informal sources of credit, the highest level recorded.
