West Bengal Reports Dengue Drive Clearing Thousands of Breeding Sites
West Bengal carried out a three-day campaign to help stop dengue from spreading.
Workers cleaned drains, garbage sites and places where mosquitoes could breed.
They also sprayed thousands of locations to kill mosquito larvae.
Markets, schools, offices and health centers were included.
Many groups helped share information about preventing dengue.
The government says there are fewer cases than during the same period last year.
However, rain can still leave standing water where mosquitoes grow.
Health officials say people and local authorities must continue working together.
West Bengal’s three-day Swachhta Sankalp Abhiyan covered more than 1,600 wards in 128 municipalities across 22 districts.
The drive cleared 6,065 clogged drains, 1,608 garbage spots and 4,511 roadside dumping points.
Officials cleaned and sprayed 27,378 potential mosquito-breeding sites to destroy larvae and prevent further breeding.
The campaign also covered markets, schools, government offices and health facilities, with 118 NGOs participating.
The state reported 4,035 dengue cases and seven confirmed deaths in August, while five districts remain under closer surveillance.

Health Officials' Continuing Caution
Current dengue situation
Government Prevention Effort
The government says this year's case count is lower than last year's comparable figure, with slightly more than 4,000 cases compared with more than 7,600.
Health Officials' Continuing Caution
Health experts and officials say the situation remains concerning because the peak transmission season is still underway.
Effect of the sanitation drive
Government Prevention Effort
Authorities say the campaign removed garbage, cleared drains and treated breeding sites, shifting prevention toward eliminating sources before transmission increases.
Health Officials' Continuing Caution
Officials caution that intermittent monsoon rain can create new stagnant-water breeding sites even after intensive cleaning.
Responsibility for prevention
Government Prevention Effort
Suvendu Adhikari urged residents to make dengue prevention a collective civic effort rather than leaving it only to municipal workers.
Health Officials' Continuing Caution
The continuing risk in densely populated areas means sustained monitoring and action are needed from authorities and communities.
