ICICI Bank Forecasts RBI Rate Hikes Starting December 2026
Imagine a big piggy bank that holds the money of the whole country — that is the Reserve Bank of India.
The RBI sets a special number called the repo rate, which is the interest rate it charges banks to borrow money.
A big bank called ICICI Bank has made a guess about what the RBI might do in the future.
ICICI Bank thinks the RBI might raise interest rates starting in December 2026, but only if the price of crude oil stays high.
Crude oil is used to make petrol and other fuels, and when it is expensive, things in shops also get more expensive.
That is called inflation, and the RBI raises rates to slow it down.
If oil prices go down instead, the RBI might wait longer, until April 2027, before raising rates.
Right now the RBI has kept the repo rate at 5.25% and says it is being neutral.
It also thinks the economy will grow by 6.7% next year, which is a little more than it thought before.
ICICI Bank expects the RBI to begin a cumulative 50-basis-point rate hike cycle from December 2026 if crude oil prices remain elevated.
If oil prices moderate, ICICI Bank says the tightening cycle could be delayed until April 2027.
The RBI recently kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25% and maintained a neutral policy stance.
The RBI raised its FY27 GDP growth forecast to 6.7% from 6.6% and lowered its FY27 retail inflation forecast to 5% from 5.1%.
ICICI Bank expects GDP growth of 6.9% in FY27 and about 7.2% in FY28, above the RBI's projection.
