H1N1 Can Cause Dangerous Stomach Symptoms in Children

H1N1, also called swine flu, is an infection that usually affects breathing.

In some children, it can also upset the stomach.

Children may vomit, have watery diarrhoea, or complain of stomach pain.

These problems can happen before coughing or a runny nose.

Losing too much liquid can make a child dangerously dehydrated.

Warning signs include very little urine, a dry mouth, no tears when crying, sunken eyes, or unusual sleepiness.

Parents can offer very small, frequent sips of oral rehydration solution or other suggested fluids.

They should not give aspirin and should use medicines only as directed by a doctor.

A doctor should evaluate a child who may have swine flu, especially because antiviral treatment works best when started within 48 hours.
