Many Indian Cities Face Significant Delays in Local Body Elections
Many cities in India have been waiting a long time to have elections for their local governments.
This means the people who make decisions about things like trash collection and parks haven't been chosen in a while.
The delays are happening because the government takes too long to change the rules, adjust the city's boundaries, and decide how to split up the votes.
One study says that elections in some places are delayed by a few months and in others by up to four years.
Some of the groups in charge of holding elections can't even decide where the voting areas should be, which causes problems.
This is an issue because it means citizens don't have a say in how their city is run as frequently as they should.
61% of Urban Local Governments (ULGs) across 17 states experienced election delays.
Delays ranged from 7 months (Delhi) to 55 months (Bengaluru).
The average delay in conducting polls in 2020-21 was 22 months.
Delays are caused by state government actions like amending rules and boundary changes.
Eight of the 34 state election commissions cannot delimit wards.
