Venezuela Defends Sweeping US Oil Deal Amid Sovereignty Concerns

Venezuela has made a large oil agreement with the United States.

The United States would receive majority control in projects involving Venezuela’s oil reserves.

Venezuela’s interim leader, Delcy Rodriguez, says the country will still own the oil and remain sovereign.

The government says private investors could put $100 billion into rebuilding the oil industry.

It also says the agreement could produce more than $204 billion in tax revenue.

Supporters believe the deal could restart oil fields that Venezuela cannot afford to develop alone.

Critics worry that the agreement is not transparent and may not help ordinary people.

Oil production has increased, but experts say returning to older production levels could take at least three or four years.
