Jindal Shares Myth Debunked: Calculating True Investment Returns
Someone posted online about how their father's old investment in a company called Jindal grew to be worth a lot of money, but the numbers weren't quite right.
The original shares were from a company that later merged with another company, which also split its shares.
If you do the math correctly, a ₹1 lakh investment has grown into a smaller amount, about ₹31.40 lakh, which is still a good return over a long time.
It's important to remember that the original old paper stock certificates are no longer valid and it's also good to choose strong companies to invest in.
A viral post claimed a ₹1 lakh investment in Jindal shares grew to ₹80 crore, but the claim is false.
The original shares were of Jindal Vijayanagar Steel (JVSL), which merged into JSW Steel in 2005.
Due to the merger and a stock split, the correct calculation shows a ₹1 lakh investment is now worth ₹31.40 lakh.
The original JVSL share certificates are invalid and were replaced by new JSW Steel certificates in 2005 and 2017.
Despite the inaccurate claim, the investment still yielded a decent return over 30-35 years.
