Samsung Ordered to Pay $191 Million for OLED Patent Infringement
Imagine someone invented a special way to make screens on phones and TVs look super clear and use less battery.
That person's company, called Pictiva, owns the secret recipe, which are like special patents.
Pictiva said that a big company, Samsung, used their secret recipe in many of their gadgets without asking.
A jury agreed with Pictiva and said Samsung has to pay them a lot of money, over $191 million!
But Samsung doesn't think they did anything wrong and plans to ask a higher court to review the decision and wants to prove their secret recipe is not special.
Samsung Electronics was ordered by a Texas jury to pay $191.4 million for infringing two U.S. patents owned by Pictiva Displays.
The patents relate to technology for enhancing the resolution, brightness, and power efficiency of OLED displays.
Pictiva's lawsuit alleged that Samsung's smartphones, televisions, computers, and wearables incorporated their OLED display technology.
Samsung has stated its intention to appeal the verdict and is seeking to invalidate the patents.
This ruling is one of several recent large awards won by patent owners suing Samsung in the same court.
