8th Pay Commission: Fitment Factor and Salary Revisions
The Indian government is setting up the 8th Pay Commission to decide on new salaries and pensions for government workers.
This commission will use a special number called the fitment factor to make these changes.
This number is decided based on things like how much prices have gone up (inflation) and how much money the government can spend.
The last time they did this was almost ten years ago, and now they want to make sure that government workers are paid fairly so they can keep doing their jobs well.
Experts think the fitment factor might be between 1.83 and 2.57, which would mean a big increase in pay for about one crore government workers and retirees.
The Union Cabinet approved the Terms of Reference for the 8th Pay Commission in October 2023.
The fitment factor for the 8th Pay Commission will be determined based on inflation, fiscal capacity, and the government's compensation philosophy.
Early projections suggest a fitment factor range of 1.83 to 2.57, which could significantly raise salaries and pensions for about one crore central government employees and retirees.
The 7th Pay Commission used a fitment factor of 2.57, which was added to the basic pay, not the total salary.
Dearness allowance is expected to be reset to zero at the beginning of the 8th Pay Commission, similar to previous commissions.
