Maharashtra FDA Focuses Scrutiny On Infant Nutrition Products

Baby food is made for very young children, so it must meet strict safety and nutrition rules.

Maharashtra's food regulator says it will pay closer attention to these products.

Government data found that some tested samples did not meet the required standards.

Problems can involve germs, harmful substances, ingredients, nutrition levels, labels or expiry dates.

In one case, officials found 3.7 tonnes of expired infant food and ordered it destroyed.

Regulators have also examined claims and ingredients in products made by Nestlé.

Companies have said they followed applicable rules and cooperated with authorities.

A failed sample does not mean every product from that company is unsafe.

The important steps are finding affected batches, removing them and warning families quickly.
