Canada Explores EU Associate Status Amid US Trade War

Canada is looking at a closer relationship with the European Union.

One idea is a new status called “associate member.”

This could mean deeper cooperation between Canada and the EU.

The discussions are described as ambitious.

However, closer integration may be difficult to achieve.

An earlier, smaller trade agreement has still not received complete approval.

That agreement was negotiated more than 10 years ago.

It began operating provisionally nearly a decade ago, but several EU countries have not ratified it.
