Why Meat Eaters Can Still Develop Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Eating meat usually provides vitamin B12, but the body still has to absorb it.

Absorption is different from simply eating a food that contains the vitamin.

Vitamin B12 joins with a substance called intrinsic factor.

This complex travels through the small intestine.

It reaches the terminal ileum, where the vitamin is absorbed.

Problems in the stomach can interfere with this process.

Problems with intrinsic factor or the terminal ileum can also cause difficulty absorbing B12.

That is why a person who eats meat may still become vitamin B12 deficient.

Doctors may need to investigate absorption as well as diet.
