India and Australia Expand Subsea Cable Networks
Subsea cables are like underwater highways that carry lots of information between countries.
Right now, they can carry about 6,400 Terabits per second.
India and Australia are building more of these cables and landing stations to make sure the internet stays strong and safe.
They want to spread out these stations so that if one gets damaged, the internet doesn't go down everywhere.
Big companies like Google and Meta are also involved in building these new stations.
This is important because the internet is a big part of how people and businesses work every day.
India and Australia are expanding and diversifying their subsea cable networks to improve internet resiliency and security.
There are 18 cable systems connecting India with the world, with four more proposed, landing at major CLS hotspots like Chennai, Mumbai, and Kochi.
New CLS locations are being considered in Visakhapatnam, Andaman Nicobar, Lakshadweep, and Christmas Island to reduce vulnerabilities and promote safer cable routes.
The Visakhapatnam CLS is proposed as an open, carrier-neutral facility, allowing multiple service providers to land their cables without building their own stations.
About 500,000 km of new subsea cables are planned, adding 20,000 Tbps of capacity, with efforts to route cables around Singapore to improve network resilience.
