Tamil Dalit Scholar Says Scholarship Dispute Threatens Malaysia PhD

Tamil Dalit Scholar Says Scholarship Dispute Threatens Malaysia PhD

Bharathidasan Raman is a Dalit student from Tamil Nadu studying for a PhD in Malaysia.

He receives help from a scholarship for students from disadvantaged communities.

Raman says some promised money has not reached him.

He says this makes it difficult to continue his research and could threaten his enrolment.

He also says officials questioned what he needed for his research.

Raman compared the pressure he feels with the experience of Rohith Vemula, but the two cases are not the same.

Udhayanidhi Stalin and M. K. Stalin supported Raman.

The Tamil Nadu government says his scholarship was approved for three years and that some assistance was already released.

Officials say more money requires expense records and other documents, while Raman says he submitted them.
