Maharashtra Approves ₹6,500 Crore Plan for 5,000 AC Electric Buses
The Maharashtra government has approved a plan to buy 5,000 air-conditioned electric buses for the BEST Undertaking.
This is a big change because BEST has been using a lot of buses from private companies for a long time.
The new buses will be owned by BEST, which means they will have more control over the buses and how they are run.
The plan will cost about ₹6,500 crore and will take about 3 to 4 years to complete.
BEST also has a plan to buy 1,500 smaller electric buses to help people get to bigger bus stops and train stations.
However, some workers are not happy because BEST wants to redevelop some of its bus depots to make money, and the workers don't want that.
Maharashtra government approves ₹6,500 crore plan to procure 5,000 AC electric buses for BEST's owned fleet.
Buses to be inducted over the next 3 to 4 years, reducing reliance on wet-lease operators.
Current BEST fleet consists of 2,800 buses, with only 249 owned by BEST.
BEST also plans to buy 1,500 AC electric feeder buses under a wet-lease model.
BEST faces financial challenges with cumulative liabilities of ₹23,296 crore as of March 31, 2026.
