Political Clash Over MGNREGA Replacement
The Telangana Legislative Assembly passed a resolution against the central government's plan to replace the MGNREGA scheme with a new law called VB-GRAM-G.
They believe the new law will hurt poor people, especially women, by reducing their work opportunities.
The Assembly thinks the new funding plan, which changes how money is shared between the central government and states, is unfair and goes against the principles of federalism.
They also feel that removing Mahatma Gandhi's name from the scheme takes away its important meaning.
The Assembly wants the central government to keep the original MGNREGA scheme as it was meant to be, to help the most vulnerable people in rural areas.
The BJP members opposed the resolution, arguing that the new law helps farmers and realizes Mahatma Gandhi's vision of 'Gram Swaraj' (village self-rule).
The Congress party announced a nationwide agitation to seek the restoration of MGNREGA in its original form, starting from January 10.
The Telangana Assembly passed a resolution opposing the replacement of MGNREGA with the VB-GRAM-G Act.
The new law is seen as adversely affecting the rights of the poor and women workers.
The resolution demands the continuation of the original MGNREGA funding pattern and work list.
The removal of Mahatma Gandhi's name is considered a dilution of the scheme's moral and ideological spirit.
The mandatory 60-day break during the agricultural season is deemed unjust to landless laborers.
