India's First Rare Earth EV Magnets
Ashvini Rare Earth has set up India's first facility to make a special metal called Neodymium–Praseodymium (Nd-Pr) in Pune.
This metal is very important for making strong magnets used in electric cars, wind turbines, and other high-tech things.
The factory can make 15 tonnes of this metal every year, which is about a quarter of what India needs.
However, the factory isn't making any money yet because they don't have any orders.
The company's boss, Vikram Dhoot, is trying to find partners to help make even more of this metal and start making magnets themselves.
They are also looking for investors to help them grow.
The factory was built with help from some big science and mining groups in India.
Making these magnets is very expensive, and the company is trying to find ways to make it cheaper and more competitive with other countries, especially China.
Ashvini Rare Earth unveiled India's first facility for producing Nd-Pr metal in Pune in October 2023.
The facility can produce 15 tonnes of Nd-Pr metal per year, meeting nearly 25% of India's requirements.
The plant is not yet in commercial production due to a lack of firm orders.
Ashvini is exploring partnerships to establish a larger Nd-Pr metal plant and is considering setting up an end-to-end magnet manufacturing line.
The project was realized through a collaboration with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL), with funding from the Ministry of Mines.
