GST Compensation Cess on Tobacco May Continue Until January 2026
Imagine a special tax, called a 'cess,' was added to some products when a new big tax system called GST started.
This special tax was supposed to end after five years, in November 2025, and was meant to help the government make sure states didn't lose money.
But, the government borrowed money to help states and needs to pay it back.
So, they might keep this special tax just on tobacco products a little longer, until January 2026, to help pay off the borrowed money.
For most other things like fancy cars and fizzy drinks, this special tax was already stopped on September 22, 2025.
The money collected from this tobacco cess has gone down a lot because it's the only thing left with this tax.
The final decision about when exactly this tax stops will be made by the GST Council.
The GST compensation cess on tobacco products may be extended until January 2026, later than the previously planned November 2025.
This extension is to ensure all outstanding compensation-related loans and interest payments are cleared.
The cess was discontinued for many goods, including luxury cars and aerated drinks, on September 22, 2025, following GST rate rationalisation.
Cess collections specifically from tobacco products dropped by 33% from September to October 2025, as these are now the primary items attracting the levy.
The cess, originally introduced for five years after GST rollout in July 2017, has been used since July 2022 to repay loans taken by the Centre to compensate states.
