Kailash Pilgrimage Tests Faith Against Geography, Politics, and Physiology

Kailash Pilgrimage Tests Faith Against Geography, Politics, and Physiology

The Kailash pilgrimage is a very important journey for several religions.

People walk about 52 kilometres around Mount Kailash.

The trip is difficult because the path is high, cold, steep, and has very little oxygen.

On August 26, 2026, ice and rock fell into Nepal’s Bhotekoshi River.

This caused a powerful flood that destroyed roads, bridges, buildings, and villages.

Many people died or disappeared, including some Indians who may have been pilgrims.

Travellers also need permits to enter Tibet, and only a limited number are allowed.

Even after reaching the mountain, pilgrims must cross the very high Dolma La pass.
