Tamil Nadu Third-Child Leave Plan Sparks Large-Family Debate

Tamil Nadu Third-Child Leave Plan Sparks Large-Family Debate

Tamil Nadu’s government wants to give women much more maternity leave after they have a third child.

The leave would increase from 12 weeks to 365 days.

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram supports maternity leave but does not support encouraging families to have more children.

He says families need enough money and resources to raise children well.

He also believes India needs a smaller, healthier and better-educated population.

Tamil Nadu’s fertility rate is already below the level needed to keep its population stable.

The DMK supports the leave policy and wants private-sector workers to receive it too.

This has created a debate about whether governments should encourage larger families or focus on supporting families regardless of size.
